Q Directions: Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in several discussion forums during the semester by which they will be able to share with classmates their individual experiences, opinions, and ideas as they relate to current events, course content, concepts, topics, theories, and practices. Directions Your assignment is to write a current event summary that will generate discussion among your classmates. You will have the opportunity to generate a current event discussion forum twice during this semester, based upon the dates outlined on the Course Calendar. You are strongly advised to review the grading rubric for this assignment before you begin writing your post. The directions for this assignment are as follows. 1. You should select a reputable news source that provides carefully researched and accurately written news such as a newspaper, magazine, Internet, etc. Since this is a current event, select a recent article. Your assignment is to write about a current event; therefore, you should choose articles that are one or two days old, maximum, one week old. Do not refer to blogs or personal websites as they usually present personal opinions rather than factual news. If you have questions as to whether the article you are reading is appropriate, it probably isn’t, therefore; move on to another article. 2. Your chosen article must be appropriate material that is related to this course, Correctional Theory or an issue related to Criminal Justice. Refrain from writing about shootings, stabbings, sexual assaults, etc. in local neighborhoods. 3. You will begin your forum with: • Your name • The title of the article if there is a title • Where you found the article (name of newspaper, magazine, etc.), the date of the article • Write a brief summary of the article including what you found interesting about the article. You should add other information at your discretion that you feel will generate discussion among your classmates. A brief summary does not mean two or three sentences. Your summary should be thought provoking and written in a manner that will generate discussion among your classmates. 4. After you post your current event summary, copy it onto a Word document and submit it in the appropriate place in the Module Folder. Make sure that you post your current event in time for classmates to read and react to your post. Posting on the due date of the assignment whether it is at 8:00 am is not enough time for classmates to read and react to your post.
